There’s been a pretty recent development in the Windows Customization community which released a new toolkit, essentially allowing you to write YAML-based scripts with custom instructions how to modify a live windows installation, which makes the process completely open-source and transparent. Fair enough, a very good point.
Personally I’ve been using customized / debloated versions of windows for a couple years now and have not looked back. Every time I spin up a stock Windows VM I’m shocked how atrocious the experience is. Though I understand that a Windows ISO modified by an unknown third party can be scary to some.
Question: if you already don’t like Windows, I assume you don’t care about the new features that come with new updates. So I wonder - why do you update at all? Set everything up as you want it, remove all the hot garbage as you see fit, and disable updates.
Why would I? The list of communities which one wants to block is very personal / individual. My preferences what I don’t want to engage with is purely mine and cannot be transferred to all other users. So any user should make their own decisions what communities they want to block, instead of blindly copying someone elses and potentially missing out on content they would enjoy.
Keep in mind you can always block communities you’re not interested in to prevent them from appearing in any feed. I’ve already blocked plenty of communities to make the “All” post list digestable.
an “SSD” can be either a SATA-cable connected 2.5" SSD, a M.2 SATA (protocol) SSD, or an M.2 PCIe SSD. their respective maximum R/W speed increases significantly in this order, so M.2 is not the only way to connect an SSD, at least not as long as cable-sata SSDs still exist.

Eh, kinda. It’s comparatively easy to set up an instance, as in “renting a VPS, figuring out how to use docker, installing docker, installing and configuring a reverse proxy, getting an SSL certificate, getting a domain, linking it all together, figuring out docker compose, and finally getting the instance connected to the open web”.
But the upkeep of an instance is a whole other story. Constantly keeping an eye on user numbers, server and client performance, storage usage, needing to scale the machine up with a growing userbase while also managing the cost and somehow finding the cash to run it, plus the dread of being responsible for the data of users on that instance, requires a strong mind and a lot of time.
While the technicalities are somewhat “easy”, expecting anyone to spin up an instance and manage the influx of hundreds to thousands of users in a short time seems unrealistic.
100 GB ? that’s cute. I work in a film production company for advertisements, where the recent trend has been for the crew to return after 3-5 days of shooting, with RAIDs filled with somewhere between 15 and 25 TB of raw data. no fun to store all this.
