I have that same laptop, and it sounds perfect for what you want. Cheap, repairable, and runs linux well.

I used syncthing for a while. Then tried github with mostly terrible results. Now i’m back on syncthing. It involves a little bit of setup, but i mostly forget about it now. It just works.
I use an Amazfit GTR 2e, and it works almost perfectly with gadgetbridge. The only difficulty I have is i’m unable to manually update A-GPS data, so getting a GPS lock can take a while. But I don’t use it a lot, and honestly, the Fitbit Versa I came from wasn’t all that much better.
I dove headfirst recently and switched from KDE Plasma to Hyprland. I ended up using someone else’s config as a base, and I’m still tweaking, but so far, I have no regrets.
I don’t follow any best practices. AUR, updates without checking the feed, etc. Been on arch for 2 years or so without any major issues.
Two days ago I decided to give hyprland a try just for some excitement. Lol.
You can use the archinstall script and get it setup in however long it takes to install everything.
I recently went through the process of manually setting up hyprland. Only after finding out it was added to archinstall…
My laptops and RPis aren’t named anything interesting. My server is named Lyla though. I let my youngest kid pick the name.
I’m not even close to an expert, but from what I have heard, matrix collects quite a bit of metadata depending on the server you are using/federating with.
I’m still procrastinating on figuring out the majority of my backup solution, mainly because I get overwhelmed too. But there is a backblaze personal docker template on the Unraid Community App store. You could do one way syncthing and have that backup to backblaze.
The only thing I currently backup offsite is an encrypted archive of my paperless-ngx content. I use rclone for that.
I found this guide on reddit that goes over borg and rclone. Seems to walk you through most of it. https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/e6l4x6/tutorial_borg_rclone_v2_the_best_method_to/
But, i’m also making assumptions on your technical abilities, which I guess is part of the problem you have with cli tools…
I use Yakuake and Konsole since they came along with KDE Plasma. I’ve never really thought about using anything else, but maybe I should…
Almost every time I use Windows, i hit F12 to try and pull down Yakuake to do something quick, and I get annoyed every time. Now that i’m more comfortable with it, the terminal is just better for a lot of things.
I wasn’t a fan last time I tried it out. I’m glad they changed the name though. Calckey sounded more like an excel alternative.
I’ll have to check it out again at some point though.
In addition to the other recommendations, I like Nicole van der Hoeven for Obsidian info.
I need to check it out again. I ended up making an account and never using it. Was just something about it I didn’t like, but at this point, I can’t remember what. Lol.
I use something similar called Slick Inbox, but I like the idea of selfhosting, so may need to give Kill the Newsletter a look.
Yes, it’s what @flux@beehaw.org said. Being able to combine multiple communities into one list. I think it would be especially useful here since the same/similar communities can exist on multiple instances.
Liking it so far. I love that I can spin up my own instance. Only thing I’m missing is a multi-reddit type feature to combine communuties from multiple instances into one feed.
It’s just way faster for me most of the time. I can hit F12, do what I need, and be done without messing around with a mouse or touchpad.
