Fundamental error - as usual with Windows news.
These ‘Start Menu Ads’ aren’t rolling out to everyone, I have zero ‘Start Menu Ads’. In fact, I have Zero Ads in my operating system.
Why must Windows news always assume that everyone runs Windows? Isn’t this the main bug with all operating systems?
There seem to be many ‘sources’. Youtube have a policy where you can show explosions, you can show guns shooting as long as you can’t see the targets - it’s clearly written. Yet several people are demonetised for showing clips related to Ukraine for a start - and YouTube doesn’t respond to requests to explain, it’s a secretive policy that doesn’t follow the written policy.
It’s also very easy to find other videos which would more clearly break the actual rules as they are written. Basically, they do have an agenda - it applies to many similar channels - and they keep very quiet about real reasons for doing so, instead quoting some bullshit rule which isn’t true, and doesn’t apply, both at the same time.
I think YouTube is dying.
Already, I see many of my favourite channels being restricted (one Ukrainian blogger) whilst the completely moronic, yet dangerous conspiracy theory/Flat-Earthers flourish.
Meanwhile, the most common thing we see is the push to sign up and pay them - yet with all the censorship (not simply censored for non-paying customers to allow the advertisements) it is not a viable option.
Thankfully I still use a Desktop - with Firefox and decent extras the actual ads are still not affecting me at all, but YouTube’s policies really are.
They are completely above the law - they don’t need to respect their own TOS (the reasons many people are blocked is more related to some secret narrative, and it goes against their own stated terms).
There is no way to appeal outside YouTube, and good luck with any idea of taking them to court for removing your income stream, or censoring a very useful source of information whilst spamming you with algorithms that treat you like Spongebob, and expect you to watch completely moronic content.
I suggest YouTube is a conspiracy to destroy the world, starting with the world population’s ability to think.

I don’t know, I think I’d better post a question on Reddit.
But what about the new users who complain about the slightly less new users, who might simply be slightly older ex-Reddit users who wish to complain?
What about people who complain only about subreddits like r/donut - should they not, instead, complain about the hole thing?
I’m considering a new tack, to make posts complaining about people who complain about posts about people complaining about Reddit.

I only ever used Reddit in Firefox on desktop anyway - but now I use it a whole lot less (maybe just one reply per day trolling people with interesting posts they’d be better posting here).
Lemmy is a shit-show… but it’s OUR shit-show and we’ll adjust, and clever people will develop.

Reddit is so much an American business - screw that. But it’s not even doing a proper business model - screwing the stupid Yanks and giving a better deal to people who don’t feel the need to ‘pay more for quality’.
You know, I bought a HP printer which takes HP cartridges which print out (officially) 1500 pages each, and they cost the equivalent of $8 - but only outside the USA… as an answer (I think) to well organised resistance to the ‘maybe 300 pages or less’ leading to people buying modified ink-tank cartridges locally made (in Thailand).
My last cartridge (not heavily used) lasted for 5 years before being replaced… so HP gets my money with a smile.

Some years ago, my favourite tracker (The Box) went kaput - and I’ve known many others go down due to various issues - one of which is usually financial strains.
So people can donate - for someone earning 300 a week, it’d be trivial to throw 30 in the pot just one time in a year…
So sure, To be valued by Reddit, you must pay $50 per year - and if you don’t, then you’re not a customer, you’re a commodity. Creators do so because they feel compelled to create and share, Mods do so because they have a personal need to contribute whether they get paid or not.
So the ONLY answer is to say ‘Sure, we’ll carry on - but it’s clear we aren’t valued by Reddit - so we’ll do it outside’.
RSS is one of the oldest protocols existing. Basically it’s like a feed with links to things posted…
I’d suggest you start with Feedly or Inoreader, make an account and take a look.
For me, it means that I can see notifications (Inoreader) telling me how many unread items have occurred across the 79 websites I added as feeds.
I have a folder for ‘Fediverse’ with feeds like Lemmy - ukraine (also Reddit’s r/ukraine).
I have a ‘Linux’ folder, containing a few interesting blogs - like Niccolo’s KDE developer blog, a few news sites, plus announcements from my OS forum.
I have a ‘News’ folder with various sources (one is a journalist I know with a Facebook page - as I don’t use Facebook).
I have a ‘Video’ folder
I have a ‘Time Waster’ folder which has things like Digg, WindowSwap, Drive & Listen
Basically, any time you make an account and request updates from a website, the same can be done with NO account and simply copying the RSS link.
It gives you updates on things you don’t need to bother bookmarking or opening to follow.
Yes, I’m not too worried yet.
Some folks are busy setting up subs here - it’ll be interesting to see if we can get subs with both direct posts as well as direct feeds from Reddit too (I get 99% of Reddit via RSS).

Inoreader works very nicely for me. I have quite a few folders set up…
I added the Firefox extension, so if I visit Youtube - for example (open this in a PRIVATE window, not logged in) Insights from Ukraine and Russia then I can Easily add the RSS by searching in Inoreader.

The beauty being that you can quickly go through all this stuff - great keyboard accessibility (90% covered with Shift J-K to go to the next/previous feed, Shift-X to toggle expansion of the folder, J - K to go (and mark read) the next/previous item (but you can ALWAYS view all articles in a thread)… all without visiting the sites.
Feedly and Inoreader are both awesome - and you can (and should regularly) export a list of your feeds as a backup/migration strategy.

Well, despite the difficulties translating to Federated platforms, I will certainly be working on alternative social platforms.
I no longer use Quora or Facebook…
I unsubscribed my ‘YouTube’ channels and added them as RSS feeds, so there’s no need for me to be signed in there to consume content from creators I follow.
I hope that a month or two with the Fediverse will allow me to understand it better. I’m sure that many Fediverse users will also remain on Reddit and be able to advise folks on what to do.
If anyone on, for example, r/firefox announced activity over here, I’d follow them here. So whatever the ‘bots’ say, I know what’s occurring in my corner.

I just found a post - which I wanted to add a comment to - but I’m now logged in with Lemmy.world - so when I opened that comment (link) in a new tab, I’m told that I can either log in, or subscribe here (copy/search !technology@beehaw.org) which now shows ‘Subscribe Pending’.
So basically, communication isn’t being facilitated in this instance - this is a huge barrier. If a connection, or subscription is required to reply, then this needs to be automatic.
Is this thread intended for 1. Android/mobile users 2. iOS/mobile users 3. People with computers/mouse/keyboard or what? It seems most Lemmy threads are pretty exclusively aimed at mobile users.
