Games are the only software I purchase these days

Is there anything stopping something like connecting your credit card to GNOME Software Manager and then putting a big fat “donate” button next to the “install” button? I imagine there are legal considerations.

All you do is update your current system, change your repo sources to whatever branch you want, then do a full-upgrade. For branches there is stable, testing, and unstable (called sid). They don’t recommend you use sid for everyday use, things can be buggy (currently sid is on GNOME 44 at any rate). Instructions

Do you just look for things to get mad at? This hasn’t even been implemented yet. Even if it had, it would be opt-in. And even if you opt-in, the data is all anonymous and you would be able to see exactly the data that gets sent out. If Fedora or anyone else really wanted to spy on you, I assure you they wouldn’t let you know beforehand.

I’ve tried upscaling with ESRGAN as well and it has similar problems. It messes with the original textures too much. For example, it made carpet look like a solid surface. Skin looks too smooth and shiny. That kind of thing.

I hate how AI upscaling looks and I really don’t get why everyone seems to be gaga over it. In addition to the artifacts and other weirdness it can introduce, it just looks generally like someone smeared vaseline over the picture to me.

I’ve had a lot of issues with archinstall in the past as well, doesn’t surprise me that it wouldn’t set your network clock correctly

How would the game give you any more information than it already does without worsening gameplay? Like sure, you can make the boss’ moves slower and more telegraphed. Put in Atreus to tell you the Boss’ weakness or something while you fight him. I’m personally not a fan of that.

If you want to play the game as a glass cannon DPS machine, you can do that with the right parts. But there’s nothing stopping you from actually reading boss patterns and dodging them. The only boss this doesn’t apply to is the first one, and I suspect it will get nerfed because of how many people are complaining about it. Some damage is unavoidable but it’s minor, every big attack is dodgable and even accompanied by a loud warning sound. I don’t think it’s unfair.

If anybody is so clueless about Linux that they need to take a quiz like this, they should probably just use something easy like Mint or Ubuntu.

Flatpak doesn’t run the latest stuff typically. Like I’m on Mesa 23.1.4 on Flatpak and 23.1.6 on Fedora. Probably newer than what Ubuntu has though.

I got it the day it came out so it was the wild west. I think to get it to work on Arch I figured out you needed to compile the new llvm or something, and I just gave up at that point. Fedora Silverblue on the rawhide branch had everything for it, and as soon as 37 was caught up I just re-based on that branch and have been good ever since. Ubuntu did have some other issue I don’t remember, not a new enough kernel maybe.

I love System 76 but I hate modified GNOME anything. That’s why I always use Fedora. When Cosmic DE comes out I’ll give it a shot.

The third party thing is outdated, you can enable it at install and have access to flathub and fusion repo. So installing Steam or Nvidia drivers is dead simple now. I would still say it’s not great for new users because it’s ultra minimal.

I realized Arch was overrated when I got a brand new 7900 XT and it didn’t work on Arch at all because their LLVM was a version behind. It was up-to-date on Fedora and even Ubuntu, but not Arch. Then there was the whole broken grub thing. Bleeding edge and unstable I get, but you can’t be unstable and also behind. You can run Arch in any distro with distrobox, I don’t see why you wouldn’t just do that.

Ubuntu has ads in the terminal when you update. Runs a highly modified GNOME that doesn’t play well with some extensions. Snaps by default (although maybe not that bad now that they seem to launch a bit quicker). Unfortunately so many things only have Ubuntu support if they have Linux support at all, it’s such a shame.

That’s something you have to set up manually, it’s not default behavior right?

Yeah some windows are meant for floating and some are meant for tiling, nothing can really get around that. It would definitely be cool to take more steps in identifying which is which and having that be their default behavior.

Not even close, that would probably be Amazon or Microsoft. Unless you are talking about companies that only do Linux software. How many major companies like that are there, like three? Canonical, Red Hat and SUSE?

It’s not really the same design philosophy as iOS and Android since those actually have the equivalent of desktop icons, which function like a taskbar app launcher. So even they have a way of launching apps without a secondary menu.
