I believe to ping someone, you need to put an @ symbol before their name instead of /u/. Depending on how you’re interacting with Lemmy (web or app) it should provide some means of auto completing the ping.

Welcome! :)
I figure it’s not too different from a regular text post here, so if there’s a community that seems relevant to the post somehow, that’d prolly be best.
As to how to find them, I’d recommend the communities tab of lemmyverse explorer, and searching a word or category that seems close to what you’re posting to see if there’s a community that already exists for it.
When I remember to, I try to add a message in the post body recommending Freetube combined with Libredirect, since that still works.
Ooh, that’s nice. I could see that effectively replacing disqus comments below articles. Cool beans!
And, at least from what I recall, the incentive for bell to toss that excess money into research, is the corporate tax rates were so high it would’ve been taken from them if not spent anyway.
That’s extremely sad to hear, I hope they recover someday :(
There’s a few areas where it’s lacking, the text tool being one of them, and it also can’t export to PDF for professional book cover printing. But I’m not a professional photo editer either, and almost exclusively use Krita for editing anyway, since it’s so my h easier to use.
gimp isn’t being held back by money, they have over a million in bitcoin just sitting there from an old donation that grew in value. In over a decade, no one has figured out how to pay the taxes on it if they start using it to fund developers.
I read on reddit a long time ago that a UI designer tried to help improve gimp, but the devs were hostile to it (i may be remembering that wrong though). Considering how long its been with no UI improvements, I don’t think gimp will ever revamp its UI. Instead, I think Krita has a good chance of moving into photo editing with enough funding.
The best replacement I’ve found is the Freetube client combined with Libredirect in the browser.
Depending on how long ago that was, you may have a much better experience. Linux now has a new audio subsystem that is low latency, and generally just works out of the box with DAW’s now.
FL studio is known to work well in wine, but third party VSTs can be hit or miss.
Your experience with XMPP will vary depending on the client you use. It’s not a 1 to 1 replacement for discord, and I’m not sure if there’s a client that can do group calls, but It can do 1 on 1 calls and group text chats. I’d recommend Cheogram for mobile, and possibly movim for desktop.
For group audio calls, if you found matrix unstable, then Mumble is likely your best bet, or perhaps Signal, if that’s not banned as well.
I think your idea is a good one, and I’d like to see that happen someday.
I would point out though, that Apple was a behemoth company with large teams and massive budgets (essentially unlimited resources). Whereas Lemmy is just two guys barely scraping by a living wage from donations while slowly tackling an endless list of bug reports and feature requests.
Tossing Lemmy in the equivalent of a fish tank to motivate the devs would, most likely, just cause extreme burnout and a throwing up of hands. They are resource and time limited to a pretty extreme degree considering how popular Lemmy has become, and that should be appreciated and taken into account.
Microsoft offers a long-term support version of Windows called LTSC that’s stripped down, only receives security updates, and is supported for 10 years from its release.
It’s only officially available to business clients, but with a little yar har fiddeldy dee, you too can experience extended support!
It used to be a much more significant decline, it seems to have leveled off mostly at 45k, so those who are left are pretty dedicated. I’m sure we’ll get another influx if Reddit messes up badly again.
Perhaps Privacyguides.org, but I’m not aware of a replacement for the exhausting level of detail and breadth which thatoneprivacysite once provided.
Bear in mind that info hasn’t been updated since 2019, when the OG thatoneprivacysite sold out to a shady company. The .xyz site is an old backup someone put up of the site before it changed to only recommend a handful of bad VPNs.
One scam calling out another. In addition to odysee, Arweave (Forward Research) bought an NFT company, which is the reddest of red flags.
In addition, the crypto that odysee used to use before being bought out is now completely worthless (but I’m sure the creators of it made bank), and Arweave will be no different.
Few enough people use it i doubt they’ll do that.
I was going to suggest otherwise, but after checking the viewing stats on r/linuxhardware, out of 193k unique views in July, 7,300 were from old.reddit, which accounts for 2.8%, and that kinda blows my mind. Just a couple years ago the numbers were much higher.
The views on that sub have increased a lot over the last year, but engagement is the same or lower, so I heavily suspect a lot of the views there are just bots inflating the numbers.
I agree that Bethesda’s RPG writing is amateur at best, and I can’t dispute that there can be some good points in Dishonored. But at least for me, a mark of bad writing is that I find myself unable to care about the outcome for any of the characters in a story, and in Dishonored, I personally didn’t care much about any of the character’s struggles or personalities, as they were all pretty one-note. I can’t recall a single character’s name from Dishonored except for Corvo, since I found it novel to hear Stephen Russell as a main character again (big Thief fan, which incidentally I would point to as a game with excellent writing).
There was one instance in the main base/hub of dishonored 1, where there’s a short excerpt of a story about a whaler in a book, I think in the room where Emily was supposed to chill out in. I thought the writing of that little short story was so compelling, I sat back in my chair after I finished it and thought “Why isn’t this game about that?”, because I felt it highlighted how boilerplate the actual game’s story was in comparison. So in that way you’re right, the micro-writing, the world building, the atmosphere, is all top notch. I just wish the characters and plot were able to match it, as then it would be a masterpiece.
I should mention that I’m pretty difficult to impress with writing in video games, as I don’t think most of them can compare to the quality of writing available in books except for a handful of examples such as Thief, Gemini Rue, Mafia, and the original Deus Ex.
I think XMPP would be the most appropriate tech for us to adopt, since it’s easily self-hostable, has great mobile apps, is federated, and doesn’t require an always connected bot to record chat history to know what was said while you were away. It’s functionally an improved IRC.
