Perhaps a bad example because most people undermine them, but China has still decided to move forward with 4 different nuclear facilities this year despite having an ABUNDANCE of solar manufacturing. If they found that decision worthwhile I would think the opposite, assuming most of the reasoning is current battery tech can’t sustain dark periods at a massive scale, but I’m not an expert.

Also just saw you mentioned nuclear costs in another comment, I suggest you look at South Korea and China’s cost per facility compared to the US, they’re able to build and maintain facilities at about half the US does.

If you have to ask that question you definitely don’t use Tiktok it’s far far superior algorithmically than Reels and YT Shorts which are both absolute garbage.

The article talks about why they’d prefer to shut down if you take their word it. Essentially the US is such a tiny portion of ByteDances revenue, it would be more optimal to shut down then to risk the sale of their algorithm. Assuming they’re using relatively similar algorithms on Douyin, and they don’t want whoever they sell to to turn around and sell to their Chinese competition, which is where the real money is being made for ByteDance.

Are US kids’ already dwindling attention spans going to be saved from exposure to the TikTok algorithm? Yes.

You’re pinning the blame on tiktok when this also applies to YouTube (shorts and not), Instagram (Reels), Twitter. If we wanted an actual solution here we would implement actual children screen time laws, ironically similar to the under 18 gaming laws that have been implemented in China.

Tiktok is the only platform I’ve seen legitimate progressive movement on various issues and discussions centering on what that means and takes, in a way that actually fosters a great democratic progressive movement in the US.

From all I’ve read on this issue, not a single person has provided me with any insight into what or who this benefits that does not also apply to every other social media other than an entirely fabricated myth that they’re controlling the algorithms to spread anti US sentiment. Anti-US sentiment definitely exists, but it exists as a discussion around what the US is currently doing. I.e. funding Israel, and as a counterargument to that I am also fed state department interviews on my FYP.

In the same vein Bloomberg just did a great study on ChatGPT 3.5 ranking resumes and it had an extremely noticeable bias of ranking black names lower than the average and Asian/white names far higher despite similar qualifications.

Yes thank you as I never see this being mentioned around here. I believe the last monthly active users was 300k? While it’s not nothing, meta doesn’t give any shit about a one time acquisition of 300k users who don’t want to use their platform.

We aren’t even “worth” extinguishing right now. These decisions are being made at a level far above us. We just don’t know why yet. I’m expecting them to use ActivityPub as a tie in for Threads/Insta/FB.

I can sit here and spin the exact same question about reducing global exploitation.

Reducing global exploitation would implies self sustainability and with the west, particularly the US, they never reach self sustainability with their current economic model of giving 95% of their production/wealth to the top 1% while a very large portion of its population is struggling economically/mentally/physically.

It’s a stepping stone in the problem of global exploitation, but it can’t happen overnight nor independently.

It is unreasonable to assume a model outside of this will be attainabille within the next two centuries.

Instead let’s focus on drawing back the exploitation within our own country this century then we can shift our perspective. We will never stop exploiting the poorest countries if we’re still exploiting our poorest citizens.

My fyp is full of bipoc LGBTQ+ people? Twitter on the other hand tries to feed me right wing news sources and disinformation all the time. There’s a spectrum here and TikTok is far on the other side.

Also to be frank the algorithm is by far the best out of any company with a “for you” algorithm. It blows pretty much anything else out of the water entirely.

Your subscribed will be the same. All will differ as it grabs everything everyone on that instance is subscribed to.

Ex. If you’re on lemmyworld you’ll see everything there by default but if you swap to instance X and nobody in x is subbed to niche.community@lemmyworld then it won’t be brought to your All

Being shunned from the Fediverse for being a corporate (evil or not) company is an inherently bad way to think about the Fediverse.

The beauty of the Fediverse is that it’s open to everyone and free (minus hosting prices/your data) to join, if we suddenly say we’re banning every corporation, then we’re a bit of a joke of a platform as that’s the exact opposite intention. While defederation exists it’s a joke to assume every huge instance will decouple from every major corporation.

Yes it is not optimal that an application such as Threads can adopt the protocol, but generally unless they destroy the protocol itself (highly unlikely) it’ll only affect competitors in direct competition like Mastadon. Even whilst being affected the main user base should remain as it’s currently made up of like minded individuals who despise corporations, respect our data privacy etc

Also important to note it’s been well known the CIA uses Matrix internally for communications. If they’re using it for communication it’s probably pretty sturdy.

I’m generally pretty anti-corporation, but federating and working with corporations is a great opportunity for the Fediverse. Corpos like Twitter, reddit, and meta would provide an easily accessible path to be in the Fediverse for non experienced users. And the Fediverse in return gets more users + more content etc.

You essentially get the opportunity to keep your data out of the hands of corporations(pseudo anonymously + open source) while being supplied with content from the average users.
