Yeah I’m pre-2005 and still look back on Vine fondly. The difference I think is that Vine was genuinely kind of innocent. It didn’t have a massive corporate backing until the one that killed it, and there wasn’t really a way to monetize it back then. It was just a goofy place on the internet with weird, niche content that was also ubiquitous amongst the younger generations. It sadly laid the grounds for TikTok, but it needs to be remembered that Vine was killed because it wasn’t monetizable, at least not back then. It’s the difference between early internet and corporate internet.

I agree with your controversial take, however it’s important to note that a lot of this fascist rhetoric relies on misinformation which is spread far quicker and further than the truth. And the neofascism that has taken hold is very in-group oriented (i.e. the concepts that the in group is by definition morally virtuous and thus can do no real harm, whereas the out-group is the opposite) which is difficult to break down with logic and rhetoric. That’s not to say it can’t be done, but in terms of conversion (purely as a metric, i don’t mean to be oberly reductionist) it will always be one step forward three back. And if they people don’t approach a conversation in good faith it can be downright impossible to get them to even fathom a differing perspective. What I’m saying is that the new breed of fascists rely solely on dogma and groupthink, and have been trained to reject any rebuttal or outside perspective. They took what the old fascists did well and optimized it and trained people in it for the past 70+ years.

Come to Chicago. Rent is fucked I won’t lie, but you can still find some cheap places. Depending on what you do (or are willing to do) there’s plenty of work here. Our city is a far cry from perfect but we have a mayor who actually has the people’s best interests in mind, we’re politically active and quite progressive, there aren’t enough free community resources but far more than most places, we have multiple forms of slightly shitty but fully functional mass transit, and weed is legal. Also, portions of the city are extremely walkable and bikeable.

I agree with your points. I just want to add that what OP was talking about is that the existence of a deity or higher power is not falsifiable and thus is impossible to logically disprove. I’m sure many, many, many people have tried on both sides.

The company’s software can’t just do stuff I (as bullshit as it is) don’t want it to, break my system and/or overwrite data on partitions and drives I did not give it explicit or implicit permission to read, access, or modify, and then tell me my use case is unsupported and so I just have to deal with it.

I’m not OP and I don’t even dual boot, but it’s my computer, not Microsoft’s. If I want to dual boot, and Windows breaks that despite me not making any changes to Windows, then yes the company deserves to have shit placed at their feet. Linux doesn’t overwrite any Windows data when it updates unless you tell it to, so why have tons of people (including multiple friends) had Windows overwrite their Linux data on updates?

I’m guessing it’s moreso that Gnome likes to make changes that can break things like extensions, and they probably don’t hot swap shell components. The biggest reason you need to restart after Linux updates is that certain things are only loaded during the boot process (i.e. the kernel, initramfs, some boot or filesystem options) and can’t easily be reloaded while the system is running. But you update something like dnsmasq, you probably just need to restart the service. At worst you need to reload the systemd daemon for config changes to take. And if you’re just updating binaries, unless it’s something like PAM that can also be not fun to restart and is constantly running, you probably don’t need to do very much.

At a certain point, Windows decides that you’re going to update whether you like it or not. It’s one of the main reasons I stopped using it. And the updates honestly suck so hard. Such a shitty upgate process.

Iirc they literally just take over some land, forcibly remove or execute anyone who won’t leave, and then they move in and start building. Literal colonizer behavior.
